Tuesday 17 October 2017

Andrew Harkin aged 24 from Lisbellaw is a participant on Cedar’s Inclusion Works programme in the Western Trust area. Andrew experienced an Acquired Brain Injury when he was an infant, which has had an impact on several aspects of his life such as memory impairment, concentration and increased fatigue.

He was referred to Cedar by the Community Brain Injury Team in November 2015. His Cedar journey began following a meeting with his Case Officer, Andy who explained the ways Cedar could support him. Andrew has received guidance in identifying educational courses, and sourcing work experience as well as ongoing learning support. He is currently studying Leadership and Management at South West College and has been nominated in the College awards for Student of the Year.

When asked how he felt about his nomination he said “I was shocked but also didn't think I deserved it as there are other people in college who have faced greater challenges than me. I couldn’t have got through my course without the support I have received from Cedar, it has helped me to improve my confidence and concentration. I’d like to thank my College Support Worker Colin, my Course Tutor Helena and Andy, my Cedar Case Officer for all their support.”

Andrew has successfully achieved ILM Level 3 Qualification and has now progressed on to ILM Level 5 at the College.

Inclusion Works is person-centred service supporting individuals to design their own programmes around their needs and aspirations, building confidence and independence. to meet their employability and inclusion goals.
