Showcase Performance Brings Insight To Travelling With a Disability

Friday 09 December 2016

AAs part of the Insight Project a forum theatre production has been put together to show the experiences of older people and people with disabilities when accessing public and community transport services. The Insight Project is a civic activism project that Cedar Foundation is running in conjunction with Age Sector Platform which aims to find out more about the experiences of people with disabilities and older people when accessing public and community transport.

The performance entitled “Aggie’s Big Adventures” was showcased around Northern Ireland including, Londonderry, Newry, Downpatrick, Ballymena and Belfast. Actors brought to life many of the issues people with disabilities face when accessing transport. Group discussions and question sessions allowed the audience to have their say. Speaking after the show held at Crescent Arts Centre Belfast Translink Access Manager Terry Butler said: “Happy with the entire approach the project has taken in terms of portraying public transport and the people that use it.”

The Cedar Foundation is committed to highlighting issues around transport for people with disabilities and also facilitating various platforms whereby service users can communicate their concerns and experiences around issues that impact them on a daily basis within the community. Head of Employability and Inclusion, Kieran Molloy from The Cedar Foundation commented: Insight is testing out alternative methods for older people and people with disabilities to have their voices heard and improve services which affect their lives.  The forum theatre production presented their experiences in a positive and entertaining way and provided a fascinating opportunity for engagement by service users, transport providers and policy makers.”

Insight is funded by the Building Change Trust under its Civic Activism Programme.
